THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova received a bye through to the round of 16 at the Tokyo Open as the fourth seed here after setting a new career-high WTA world ranking of 13th this week. The Russian has enjoyed her best, most consistent season on tour so far to finish runner-up at three tour finals against Simona Halep, Jelena Ostapenko and Anastasia Potapova. A run to the round of 16 at the US Open was thwarted by eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur last time out and she should have more than enough to comfortably win this first encounter with Fernanda Contreras. The Mexican stunned an out-of-sorts Sofia Kenin in the first round in tight three sets but she would much prefer this battle take place on her favoured clay. Back Kudermetova to win in two.
