THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Veronika Kudermetova has endured an odd start to 2023 with as many highs as lows, with victories over the likes of Bianca Andreescu and Danielle Collins as encouraging as early defeats in both singles and doubles were disappointing. The 25-year-old received a bye to the round of 16 here as the fourth seed in Abu Dhabi but she could probably have done with the run up against Elise Mertens, who knows her game down to a tee from their successful season as partners on the doubles tour last year. World number 32 Elise Mertens conceded just two games to Martina Trevisan on Monday for a blistering start and she looked like coming back into some form in Melbourne last time out, losing in the third round to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. Mertens won the first four contests against fellow WTA Finals champion Kudermetova but the Russian got a win on the board in 2021 to make it 4-1. Back Mertens to win at least a set, as she has done in each of their five matches so far, and leave the victor up to chance.
