World number 47 Donna Vekic continued her excellent recent form with a straight-sets victory over Laura Pigossi on Tuesday. The 26-year-old beat four past or present top 10 players last week on her way to finishing runner-up to Iga Swiatek in three sets and she will take some serious stopping in Guadalajara. 25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova received a bye to the second round as the eighth seed here at her career-high WTA world ranking of 12th but the Russian could well have done with a more winnable opening fixture. Kudermetova has been super consistent in recent tournaments, in fact for large parts of the 2022 season, reaching back-to-back semi-finals in her previous two tournaments and reaching the round of 16 at the US Open before that.
Former world number 19 Vekic was always an unpredictable player but right now the Croat is an outright anomaly. It is hard to see here not taking at least a set in this current vein of form but the same goes for Kudermetova, who has won their previous two meetings to level their head-to-head at 2-2. Leave this match out of an accumulator but back Vekic to earn at least a set from a potential thriller.
