25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova is up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 18th she first set back in July after what has been her most consistent year on tour so far. The Russian has finished runner-up three times this year: to Simona Halep at Melbourne 1, Jelena Ostapenko at the Dubai Tennis Championships and Anastasia Potapova at the Istanbul Open. Kudermetova set her best Grand Slam showing by far at Roland-Garros this season with a quarter-final exit to her compatriot Daria Kasatkina. Former world number 19 Donna Vekic has reached at least the round of 16 at each of the four Grand Slams but she set her best showing here with a run to the quarter-finals in 2019. However, the Croat has struggled to reach those heights since the Australian Open in 2021, failing to make it past the second round of her last six major tournaments.
THE PREDICTION
World number 84 Donna Vekic leads Veronika Kudermetova 2-1 in their head-to-head record with two wins at the St. Petersburg Open in her pomp in 2017 and 2019 but the Russian won most recently in straight sets at the 2020 Ostrava Open. Kudermetova is in enough form to come through this fourth encounter in straight sets once again but two three-set defeats in recent weeks make backing her to come through outright the sensible call.
