THE PREDICTION
25-year-old Veronika Kudermetova comes to Toronto at a career-high WTA world ranking of 18th after a strong run to the semi-finals of the Silicon Valley Classic was ended by eventual runner-up Shelby Rogers. The Russian was set to meet Rogers for an immediate rematch here but the American pulled out after needing treatment in San Jose to see world number 72 Ajla Tomljanovic enter the fray. 29-year-old Tomljanovic had to qualify this week as one of the players worst-affected by the controversial Wimbledon points ban as she matches last season’s quarter-final exit. The Aussie has lost to the eventual Wimbledon champion two years running, to Ash Barty last year and in three sets to Elena Rybakina last month, and if she can find the positives in that there could be more success yet this season for a player often underestimated. This is an unfortunate draw for both players but Kudermetova leads their head-to-head record 2-0 and, with three sets likely, the sensible option is backing the Russian to win at least a set here.
