The 26-year-old could arguably have done with the match practice after recently struggling to impose herself on tour, at least in the singles, and this is a serious threat to her campaign. World number 71 Varvara Gracheva has grabbed some great results on clay this season and a three-set victory over Ajla Tomljanovic on Wednesday puts her at a working level well inside the top 50. The 21-year-old reached the third round here last season and she could well go won better if Mertens is not up to speed but the Belgian is one of the more dependable performers on tour. Still, backing Gracheva to win at least a set looks the shrewd move here.
