THE LOWDOWN
The United States just edged out Great Britain in a thrilling opening tie in Group D, coming through to win 2-1. Tommy Paul just came out on top in a fierce, entertaining battle with Dan Evans in the second option opener before world number eight Cam Norrie turned the screw against Taylor Fritz in the second match, coming back from a set down to beat the world number 12. Rajeev Ram and Jack Sock were the real heroes of the day, though, as the pair came back from a set down to edge out Andy Murray and Ram’s tour partner Joe Salisbury late into the night in Glasgow.
Kazakhstan came close to pulling off an upset in Group D with both second option Mikhail Kukushkin and first option Alexander Bublik taking their Dutch counterparts to three sets. However, Bublik and Aleksandr Nedovyesov thoroughly impressed in beating a top doubles duo in Wesley Koolhof and Matwe Middelkoop to give them a glimmer of hope in a 1-2 defeat to the Netherlands.
THE PREDICTION
Group D looks like seeing the United States go through relatively comfortably after their impressive opener against main rivals Great Britain but Kazakhstan will be keen to upset the odds, particularly in the first option bout. Mikhail Kukushkin is unlikely to have enough to stop Tommy Paul winning their opener in straight sets but Alexander Bublik leads Taylor Fritz 2-1 in their head-to-head record, winning each of their first three meetings before the American ousted him in the quarter-finals of the Eastbourne International on his way to the title this June. Fritz lost his opener to Cam Norrie after taking the first set and he has struggled to stay in matches ever since losing to Rafael Nadal in five sets at Wimbledon, where he aggravated a foot issue that has seen him miss parts of the tour in recent months.
Bublik has won all three of their hardcourt meetings and he can be a different, more reliable player when representing his country. The United States should be winning this tie 3-0 but the shrewd move could be taking them to win 2-1 here if Bublik can find his best level on an indoor hardcourt that suits his wild serves.
