THE PREDICTION
Former world number 25 Ugo Humbert has endured a tough season on tour. The Frenchman started 2022 off by beating then world number two Daniil Medvedev at the ATP Cup but since contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open soon after he lost 13 of 17 matches coming into Wimbledon. A choppy five-setter against Tomas martin Etcheverry in the first round was welcome but not totally convincing either and when he arrived on court without his rackets to face the third seed Casper Ruud on Wednesday a comeback from a set down did not look on the cards. However, Humbert looks to be, tentatively, playing his way back into form and his victory over Ruud makes it seven wins from his last 10 matches against top 10 players.
Former world number 10 David Goffin is also a player who has endured a season, or two, of contrasting fortunes but the 31-year-old has been steadily improving too. A sixth ATP title won at the Marrakech Open back in April was the springboard for some impressive form on clay and the Belgian is yet to drop a set here with wins over Radu Albot and Sebastian Baez. Goffin reached the quarter-finals here back in 2019 before defeat to Novak Djokovic, who beat Humbert in the round before. Both players have excellent qualities for the grass and with this portion of the draw now wide open the winner of this clash has a strong chance at becoming a Grand Slam semi-finalist for the first time. Humbert beat Goffin in their only previous meeting back in 2019, in straight sets, but it would not be surprise to see this go to five before a winner is found. With his confidence returning, back Humbert to win at least two.
