25-year-old Tommy Paul grabbed one of the results of his season against Jannik Sinner on Wednesday at the Eastbourne International, beating the Italian in three sets before losing in the same way to Alex de Minaur in the quarter-finals. The American also impressed at Queen’s with a run to the quarter-finals via wins over Denis Shapovalov and Stan Wawrinka before defeat to eventual champion Matteo Berrettini. Paul won his first ATP title late last season at the Stockholm Open and he has been steadily climbing the rankings ever since – with this his second Grand Slam appearance as a seed after Roland-Garros last month.
Former world number seven Fernando Verdasco is a popular veteran here in at SW19, where he reached the quarter-finals before memorably losing from two sets up to eventual champion Andy Murray. The Spaniard spends much of his time on the Challenger circuit these days but both players are partial to a lengthy match and it would be a surprise to see sets go both ways here. Take Paul to win outright, probably in four.
