World number 86 Tomas Martin Etcheverry has just one tour-level win this season over Nicolas Jarry at the Cordoba Open but the Argentine has enjoyed some success on the Challenger circuit on his favoured clay. The 23-year-old is making his US Open debut here, seeking a first major win after losing in the first round at each of the three Grand Slams so far this season, and this looks his best chance against an out-f-sorts Pablo Andujar. World number 92 Andujar is a seasoned veteran now at 36 years old and despite starting 2022 with a run to the third round of the Australian Open he has since struggled away from his favoured clay. The Spaniard should still be coming through this opener at his best but given Etcheverry lost in five sets to Ugo Humbert at Wimbledon last month back the Argentine to win at least two here.
