THE PREDICTION

The atmosphere should be electrifying all day long at the Rio Open with three Brazilians in three-successive quarter-finals on Quadra Guga Kuerten. The buzz surrounding teenage starlet Joao Fonseca’s brilliant tour debut so far will amplify the two matches before it on Friday and that should make this a thrilling clash between defending champion Cam Norrie and home hopeful Thiago Seyboth Wild. World number 82 Seyboth Wild, a former junior star in his own right, has battled through two three-set matches this week to look ready for the occasion and his career-best upset of world number three Daniil Medvedev at Roland-Garros last summer suggests he is well capable of the upset here.

World number 23 Norrie, however, has coasted through his first two rounds with the same positivity that saw him almost make the last eight at the Australian Open last month and he has the engine to stay in this fight longer than his opponent. Norrie stands an excellent chance at defending his title here if he can maintain this level, with last season’s runner-up Carlos Alcaraz injured and just two other seeds left in the draw, but it is likely that he faces back-to-back home hopefuls for a very testing few days in Rio. Take Norrie to edge this outright.

TIP: CAM NORRIE TO WIN A SET
