THE PREDICTION

World number 12 Jannik Sinner suffered an early exit at the Canada Masters last week, although a straight-sets defeat to eventual champion Pablo Carreno Busta does not look so bad in hindsight. The Italian will face Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round here on his 21st birthday with a huge amount already achieved in the sport, most notably a late call up to the ATP Finals last season and his recent run to the quarter-finals at Wimbledon where he took Novak Djokovic all the way to a decider. Sinner has beat Carlos Alcaraz twice last month, the second time to win the sixth ATP title of his career at the Umag Open, and this should be a reasonably comfortable opener in Cincinnati against world number 75 Kokkinakis. The 26-year-old Aussie played well to beat Ilya Ivashka in qualifying but it would take the performance of his season to win here. Sinner can sometimes start a tournament a little sluggishly, though, making an outright pick the sensible call and straight-sets a fair risk.
