THE PREDICTION
World number 86 Thanasi Kokkinakis came back from a set down to beat the returning Gael Monfils on Tuesday, claiming his first tour level win for almost two months. The 27-year-old has struggled for consistent form all season long but he often flatters to deceive on court with some ferocious forehands that says there is potential for more there in the near future. World number 17 Alex de Minaur will come in a little cold as the second seed in Atlanta with his last match a second round defeat to Matteo Berrettini at Wimbledon three weeks ago. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at Queen’s on grass the week before that in a result that has looked better with age but it remains to be seen how he takes to hardcourts after a small time off. A first meeting between two Aussies who will know plenty about each other’s games should be an interesting watch but given his result on Tuesday it could be wise to take Kokkinakis to earn at least a set here to leave the victor up to chance.
