THE PREDICTION

27-year-old Tereza Martincova received a walkover to the quarter-finals after Elena Rybakina was forced to pull out of the St. Petersburg Open, blowing the field wide open. The Czech has a decent chance here against Irina Camelia-Begu but the Romanian will be buzzing after taking out the sixth seed to the deficit of just four games on Thursday and there are probably sets in this match for both players. Martincova was the winner of their only previous meeting in a tight three-set encounter at the Tashkent Open back in 2019 and the extra rest may well give her the edge again here. However, Begu’s performance against Kvitova and Shuai Zhang before her makes taking the Romanian to win at least a set the sensible move.
