THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Caroline Garcia is one of the more unpredictable players on the WTA tour as someone capable of real lights-out tennis on clay at her best but so often caught out early in a tournament. The 28-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Lyon open back in February but she ha splayed just three times since and she pulled out of the Strasbourg Open this week, which was to be her first tournament since the Miami Open. World number 334 Taylor Townsend could well be in for an upset win here if Garcia takes to court rustily, with their only previous meeting going in the Frenchwoman’s way in three tight sets back in 2020. Garcia reached the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros in 2017 and she has won at least one match in Paris in each of the last six appearances, so taking the world number 72 to win at least a set seems a suitable compromise here.
