THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Taylor Fritz will be concerned with his form coming up to the US Open after losing to Dan Evans for a second-successive week in three sets, first at the Citi Open and then in the round of 16 at the Canada Masters. The 24-year-old has enjoyed the best season of his career by far, with a first Masters title won at Indian Wells in March over Rafael Nadal and a huge run to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon before losing, to Nadal, in a five-set epic. The American aggravated a foot injury at SW19 that has hampered him ever since but he should be targeting the quarter-finals in Cincinnati this week after some tough weeks. World number 32 Sebastian Baez won his maiden ATP title at the Estoril Open on his favoured clay back in May but he is enduring his first real run of poor form this year as he takes a five-match losing streak into the first round stretching back to finishing runner-up to Francisco Cerundolo at the Bastad Open.

Baez will be a dangerous opening opponent for Fritz here but the American should have too much quality on this surface to suffer an upset. Back the 11th seed to win outright.
