24-year-old Taylor Fritz enters the Monte-Carlo Open as a Masters champion for the first time after winning Indian Wells last month. The American is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 13th thanks to the feat and a subsequent run to the round of 16 at the Miami Open, with a run to the same stage of the Australian Open back in January another personal milestone. After an early exit to Cristian Garin at the Houston Open on Friday Fritz is likely to come out swinging here and he has drawn a kind opener against Monegasque wildcard Lucas Catarina. The 25-year-old is ranked at world number 424 and playing his first tour-level match since this stage of last season’s Monte-Carlo Open. Catarina almost beat Salvatore Caruso here last year but even with returning crowds pulling for him hard he is likely to be outclassed by Fritz in straight sets.
