24-year-old Taylor Fritz will come into the US Open as a genuine dark horse for a first Grand Slam title on a career-high ATP world ranking of 12th. The American is enjoying his best season on tour to date with runs to the round of 16 at the Australian Open and the quarter-finals at Wimbledon complementing a first Masters title claimed at Indian Wells back in March. Fritz stunned an out-of-sorts Nick Kyrgios in Cincinnati last week before a tight loss to Daniil Medvedev in the quarter-finals.
THE PREDICTION
There will be some extra attention on this All-American first round clash as Taylor Fritz, son of former top 10 player Kathy May, takes on former world number one Tracy Austin’s son, Brandon Holt. 24-year-old Holt set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 293rd earlier this month after some decent results on the Challenger circuit but it is a shame for him to make his Grand Slam debut against a fellow American with the crowd likely to encourage him but not fully back him against US number one Fritz. Back the 10th seed to win this in straight sets.
