THE LOWDOWN

TATJANA MARIA

World number 103 Tatjana Maria grabbed one of the results of her career at 34 years old, stunning the fifth seed Maria Sakkari in straight sets. The German is through to the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time out of nowhere, although she won the second WTA title of her career earlier this season at the Bogota Open. Her first title came on grass at the Mallorca Open in 2018.

JELENA OSTAPENKO

12th-seed Jelena Ostapenko is playing a huge amount of tennis at Wimbledon this fortnight with stock in the Singles, Women’s Doubles and Mixed Doubles. The 25-year-old came back from a set down to beat Irina-Camelia Begu on Friday, reaching the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time since a semi-final exit here in 2018 – one year on from winning her Grand Slam title at Roland-Garros at barely 20 years old. Ostapenko won the fifth WTA title of her career at the Dubai Tennis Championships back in February and she finished runner-up to Petra Kvitova at last week’s Eastbourne International.

THE PREDICTION

34-year-old Tatjana Maria must not be underestimated after stunning the fifth seed Maria Sakkari on Friday but, in fairness, Sakkari has form for losing matches she looks the solid favourite to win. An in-form Jelena Ostapenko may be a similar weight of ball for Tatjana Maria to combat but the Latvian’s ability to consistently paint the lines right now is what looks set to take her not just through this first meeting with the German but beyond as a genuine title-contender. Ostapenko was the last player to beat Iga Swiatek on tour and she looks in even better condition than that run in Dubai. Back the 12th seed to win outright here.
