World number 105 Taro Daniel will be one to watch in the early round at Roland-Garros if he can emulate anything like his performance at his last Grand Slam. The 29-year-old stunned Andy Murray in the second round of the Australian Open and put up a stern fight against Jannik Sinner in some of his best tennis for years and he beat the likes of Dusan Lajovic and Holger Rune on clay at the Serbia Open last month before losing in the quarter-finals to eventual champion Andrey Rublev. World number 209 Gregoire Barrere beat Daniel in their only previous meeting, in four sets at this stage of the US Open back in 2020, but the Frenchman has not won a tour-level match for over a year and he has struggled on the Challenger circuit more recently. Daniel is an excellent clay-courter with a huge opportunity here. Back the Japanese to win outright.
