THE PREDICTION

31-year-old Taro Daniel set a career-high ATP world ranking of 58th after finishing runner-up to Alejandro Tabilo at the Auckland Classic in January, stunning top seed Ben Shelton en-route. The Japanese has won just one of his last six matches since, though, to make this a much tougher call than it should be against Daniel Elahi Galan, particularly as the latter has a habit of springing the odd surprise amidst poor spells of form. The world number 84 has struggled to make a dent so far this season but his best results have come away from his favoured clay in recent months, most notably enjoying a hugely surprising run to the last 16 at Wimbledon last summer, and he impressed on hardcourts at the Australian Open in January. Two players with very little form face off here in a match that should be kept well away from an accumulator but otherwise back Daniel to earn at least a set given his overall results in 2024.
