THE LOWDOWN

TAMARA ZIDANSEK

24-year-old Tamara Zidansek beat Heather Watson in a competitive second round match to improve greatly on her opening round scare against Arantxa Rus. The Slovenian will smash her current WTA career-high ranking of 29th by at least five places no matter the outcome here after reaching the third round in Melbourne for a first time. Zidansek has a ways to go to emulate her best Grand Slam showing, though, after a run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros season.

ALIZE CORNET

Former world number 11 Alize Cornet caused perhaps the shock of the day on Thursday, in a day full of them in Melbourne, by beating world number three Garbine Muguruza in straight sets. The 31-year-old has recent form for knocking out top players after a shock victory over Bianca Andreescu at Wimbledon last season. Cornet is one win from emulating her best Grand Slam showing, with five round of 16 exits to her name across all four majors.

THE PREDICTION

This is a huge opportunity for either of Tamara Zidansek and Alize Cornet to reach the second week of the Australian Open, in Zidansek’s case the first time and Cornet’s the first since way back in 2009 as a teenager. The Frenchwoman has to be considered a proper threat here after ousting Muguruza but it must be noted that she lost her next match after beating Andreescu at Wimbledon. There are more questions than answers in this first meeting between two players who are perhaps best-suited to the clay but take Cornet to win at least a set considering her performances so far and the fact that Zidansek has already dropped one this week.
