THE PREDICTION

World number 36 Fabio Fognini has fallen out of the seedings for a Grand Slam tournament for the first time since the Australian Open in 2017, with 2021 a poor season overall for the Italian. The 34-year-old still possesses one of the most eye-catching shots on tour with a unique backhand that matches his swashbuckling persona but he has been found wanting against top 30 players for some time on tour and this looks a potential upset. World number 62 Tallon Griekspoor was impressive last week in Melbourne as he beat Dominik Koepfer and Alexei Popyrin to reach the quarter-finals before an injury saw him miss a first meeting with eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The 25-year-old ended last season on a superb streak of five title wins on the Challenger circuit and he is clearly ready to make the step up to a full season on tour this year. Fognini remains the favourite here but taking the Dutchman to win at least a set on his current trajectory looks a valuable option. It would not be a huge surprise to see Griekspoor win here, probably in five sets against the firebrand Italian.
