World number seven Carlos Alcaraz overcame a serious challenge from an impressive Jan-Lennard Struff on Monday, beating the German in five sets in a match that sailed over four hours. The 19-year-old has very little experience on grass and it showed in the earlier sets of his match with Struff but he should be the better for an early test and he has proven himself a quick learner several times over in his young career. Alcaraz reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros last month before a choppy defeat to Alexander Zverev but his best work has come elsewhere with two Masters titles won at the Miami Open and Madrid Open this season taking his career total up to five ATP titles.
World number 53 Tallon Griekspoor has a solid, combative game for the grass that looked set to frustrate Fabio Fognini in a tough first round clash. After dropping the first set the 25-year-old recovered well to win in four and he reached the Mallorca Open quarter-finals last week for some good grass form coming in. The Dutchman will challenge Alcaraz here and four sets seem likelier than three at this stage, making the outright pick for Alcaraz the suitably cautious call.
