19-year-old Leylah Fernandez set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 13th this week despite missing much of the last month through a foot injury she sustained at Roland-Garros. The Canadian reached the quarter-finals in Paris before a tough three-set defeat to Martina Trevisan but victories over the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Belinda Bencic are further proof that the Canadian is here to stay as a top player on the WTA tour. Her remarkable run to the US Open final last season remains her biggest achievement to date, of course, and she will be welcomed as hero in Toronto as one of Canada’s many home hopefuls playing this week. Fernandez should be treated with caution in her first match back from a big injury, and there is some concern that the teenager is rushing things in order to play at home, but she should have more than enough to win this kind opener against world number 273 Storm Sanders who has not won a tour-level singles match in over a year.
