World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas lost a second Masters 1000 final on a hardcourt last week in Cincinnati, to a resurgent Borna Coric, after stunning the 2019 champion Daniil Medvedev in the semi-finals. The 24-year-old’s victory over US Open champion Medvedev brings him back into the fold for serious title contenders in New York but he has yet to reach the second week here after back-to-back third round defeats to Carlos Alcaraz last year and, again, Coric in 2020.
THE PREDICTION
26-year-old Daniel Elahi Galan is up to a career-high ATP world ranking of 94th after some strong work this summer and he qualified well this weekend without dropping a set. The Colombian may have fancied his chances at a huge upset in this fixture a few weeks ago but Tsitsipas’ performance in Cincinnati last week has certainly taken the pressure off the Greek. Tsitsipas can be backed to win in straight sets but you would be forgiven for going outright inside an accumulator.
