THE PREDICTION
World number four Alexander Zverev and world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas will face off for a 10th time in their still young careers in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Open. Defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas leads their head-to-head record 6-3 for a rather surprising margin between two of the very top members of the old ‘next gen’ and notably the Greek has won both of their meetings on clay at the 2019 Madrid Open and last season’s Roland-Garros. The pair are 2-2 in semi-final meetings, with Zverev most recently beating Tsitsipas at this stage of last season’s Cincinnati Masters on his way to a fifth Masters title. 23-year-old Tsitsipas has defended his well so far this campaign but a three-set tussle with Diego Schwartzman on Friday suggests there are some weaknesses to exploit. 24-year-old Zverev overcame world number 12 Jannik Sinner in three sets on Friday too, with both players dropping their first sets of the campaign.
It is no secret that Tsitsipas is the better, more comfortable player on clay and he has looked a more composed and dangerous player than we have seen for some time this week defending his first and only Masters title. However, Zverev has claimed three of his five Masters titles on clay as an out-and-out all-courter with bags of experience at this level. Take Tsitsipas to win at least a set here as the likelier if two very capable finalists based on his record against Zverev on this surface but it would not be a surprise to the German find a way through in the end.
