STEFANOS TSITSIPAS
World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas coped well with a second-set fightback from Andrey Rublev to beat the Russian in three on Friday. The 23-year-old successfully defended his Monte-Carlo Open title last month for a second Masters title overall, beating Alexander Zverev in straight sets in the semi-finals. Tsitsipas found some of the best form of his career at this stage of last season that took him all the way to a first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros, where he took the first two sets against Novak Djokovic before losing in five.
ALEXANDER ZVEREV
Defending Madrid Open champion Alexander Zverev put in one of the best matches of his season and certainly for some months with a straight-sets victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime. The 25-year-old is a two-time champion here after also claiming the title in 2018, two of five Masters titles overall with the Cincinnati Open also won last season. Zverev enjoyed the best year of his career last season, adding two further ATP titles from Acapulco and Vienna to a second ATP Finals trophy and a Gold Medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
THE PREDICTION
This will be a fascinating edition of an already storied rivalry between perennial bests-of-the-rest Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas. 23-year-old Tsitsipas is well behind the German in terms of titles won but he leads Zverev 7-3 in their head-to-head record as a player whose performances improve with the calibre of his opponents. Tsitsipas leads their record on clay 3-0 with wins here in Madrid back in 2019, a five-set thriller in the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season and a straight-sets victory last month at this stage of the Monte-Carlo Open. That should be enough evidence to suggest the Greek looks the solid favourite for the final but Zverev’s performance against Auger-Aliassime will be of great relief to the 25-year-old and as defending champion there should be more of an edge to this particular contest. The high-altitude conditions should favour Zverev more than Tsitsipas, too, but backing the Greek to win at least a set as the just-about likelier winner is the sensible compromise.
