Three-time Grand Slam champion Stan Wawrinka is playing in just his second tour-level match of the season as he continues a comeback form his latest injury lay-off. The 37-year-old took the first set of his first match back against Alexander Bublik before the Kazakh fought back to win in three at the Monte-Carlo Open last month. 24-year-old Reilly Opelka should be revelling in a return to Rome after a stunning run to the semi-finals here last season, out of the blue in terms of his then overall form, was ended by eventual champion Rafael Nadal. The 24-year-old enjoyed his best season on tour last year off the back of that run, including reaching a first Masters final at the Canadian Open where he finished runner-up to Daniil Medvedev. Opelka beat Wawrinka in five long sets at Wimbledon back in 2019 and he can be backed to out-last the great Swiss here in a match that could well go to three.
