Former world number three Stan Wawrinka takes a concerning 3-6 record for an intermittent season into the Canada Masters, although his last three defeats have come at the hands of tough opposition. The 37-year-old finds himself facing another one here in world number 44 Emil Ruusuvuori, whose game has visibly improved over the last few months on tour. The Finn stunned Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets at the Washington Open last week before a tight three-set defeat to eventual semi-finalist Mikael Ymer and he has been tough to beat this season. The surface probably favours the 23-year-old too, although Wawrinka’s quality should mean a string start from the Swiss.
