Former world number three Stan Wawrinka won the US Open in 2016, his third Grand Slam title after claiming the 2014 Australian Open and Roland-Garros in 2015. The 37-year-old’s career is deep into its twilight era but he has fought tooth-and-nail to come back to the tour after missing much of the last few years through injuries and he will likely continue until another one hampers him further. The Swiss brings a poor 3-8 record into the US Open and a five-match losing streak after a three-set thriller with Andy Murray at the Cincinnati Open last week. This looks like one to watch on Monday as Wawrinka faces Corentin Moutet for a third time having lost both previous meetings with the disruptive left-hander, including in four sets at Roland-Garros this summer. The world number 123 comes in to the main draw at the US Open as a lucky loser but going on to beat Wawrinka off the back of that is well within his enigmatic capabilities. A better-oiled Wawrinka fares his best chance yet at righting some wrongs here, though, and backing him to win at least two sets looks the shrewd move.
