THE PREDICTION
Former world number three Stan Wawrinka is enjoying the most encouraging campaign of his late career since, probably, the European Open back in 2019. The Swiss finished runner-up to Andy Murray that day in Antwerp almost three years ago after both players had returned from their latest stint of surgery in a hugely symbolic moment that promised more than it delivered for both three-time Grand Slam champions. The 37-year-old is enjoying his best run since his most recent return to the tour, stunning top seed Daniil Medvedev in the round of 16 before ousting an impressive Mikael Ymer in the quarter-finals after having to qualify for the main draw. World number 44 Alexander Bublik is a totally different challenge, although in many ways the Kazakh is a sort of Medvedev-lite character with a perhaps even more potent serve. 25-year-old Bublik won his maiden ATP title at the Montpellier Open back in February in similar conditions to the Moselle Open here but he has been taken to three sets in each of his three matches so far.
The heart says back Wawrinka to win at least a set but the head says Bublik can edge through outright in conditions that suit him best. Perhaps the best compromise would be taking the match to see three sets, just as their first meeting did in favour of Bublik at the Monte-Carlo Open earlier this season.
