Former Roland-Garros finalist Sloane Stephens came back from a set down to beat Jule Niemeier on Sunday, snapping a five-set losing streak stretching back to the Miami Open. The 29-year-old should be the better for a first round battle but this is a tough draw against the 26th seed as Sorana Cirstea comes off a straight-sets victory over Tatjana Maria. 32-year-old Cirstea has impressed at recent Grand Slams, with a run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open ended in three sets by eventual runner-up Iga Swiatek and victories over the likes of Victoria Azarenka, Petra Kvitova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova over the last year at majors. The Romanian reached the round of 16 here last season and she is the more dependable of the two here. Stephens could win Roland-Garros this fortnight at her best level but the former world number six can very rarely produce it, at least consistently. Back Cirstea to win at least a set here as the likelier winner, although the outright pick is a reasonable risk.
