THE PREDICTION

World number 40 Sorana Cirstea provided one of the shocks of the first round at the Cincinnati Open with a three-set victory over in-form Belinda Bencic. The 32-year-old had not won a match since late June in the first round of Wimbledon but she has enjoyed some of her best, most consistent form over the last two seasons and she will be emboldened by an almost-top 10 win. Former world number two Petra Kvitova came back from a set down to oust Jil Teichmann, last season’s runner-up, in three tight sets to make an early statement in Cincinnati, in keeping with recent string form that saw her claim a 29th WTA title in June at the Eastbourne International. Kvitova, also 32, leads Cirstea 5-4 in their head-to-head record after the Romanian knocked her out of successive Australian Opens over the last two seasons and Cirstea notably leads 3-1 on hardcourt encounters. After a stunning victory over Bencic, perhaps taking Cirstea to win at least a set is the shrewd move here in leaving the winner up to chance.
