World number 38 Sorana Cirstea stunned Belinda Bencic in three sets at the Cincinnati Masters last week before losing to eventual runner-up Petra Kvitova, suggesting she is in decent form coming up to the US Open. A straight-sets victory over Marcela Zacarias on Monday was to be expected but she will fancy her chances of backing that up well here against 30-year-old Magda Linette, who has lost all three of their tour-level meetings. World number 67 Linette grabbed an impressive result on Monday, though, ousting Yulia Putintseva in two for a first tour-level win this month. The Pole recently beat Elise Mertens at the Prague Open before a three-set defeat to in-form Qinwen Zheng in the quarter-finals to suggest she too is in decent shape and this could come closer than their current head-to-head. Given that record, though, backing Cirstea to win at least a set as the likelier victor seems a sensible addition to an accumulator here.
