World number 13 Belinda Bencic needed three sets to overcome Andrea Petkovic on Tuesday and she will need to improve if she is to gain revenge on Sorana Cirstea, who beat her in three sets two weeks ago at the Cincinnati Open. The 25-year-old reached the quarter-finals here last season before capitulating, as many players did, under the lights-out tennis of eventual champion Emma Raducanu and she was visibly disgusted with her performance after defeat. With something to prove, Bencic could be a dark horse for a deep run in New York as a former semi-finalist but world number 37 Cirstea will be confident after last week’s win and she looked assured in a straight-sets opener against Laura Siegemund. The suitably cautious move is backing Bencic to win at least a set here, considering Cirstea has won both of their previous meetings.
