THE PREDICTION
Former world number four Sofia Kenin won her third match of 2022, and a first since the sixth of January, with a straight-sets result over Dalayna Hewitt on Monday. The 23-year-old won the Australian Open in 2020 and went on to finish runner-up to Iga Swiatek later that year, eventually winning WTA Player of the Season. Since then a number of injuries, illnesses and setbacks have seen the American fall as far as her current world ranking at 415th but she has shown small signs of recovery in recent weeks, not least in a three-set battle with Sloane Stephens at the Canada Masters earlier this month. World number 34 Irina-Camelia Begu recently claimed the fifth WTA title of her career at the Palermo Ladies Open last month on her favoured clay and after a mini-blip in Cincinnati she looks in good shape here in Cleveland. The Romanian has never played Kenin before and this could be tricky if the American’s confidence has been boosted at all, although Begu should be able to navigate a way through eventually. Back the 31-year-old to win outright but leave this match out of an accumulator.
