Former world number three Sloane Stephens is currently ranked 50th in the world as she continues to struggle putting in consistent performances. The 29-year-old has won each of her last five openers at tournaments and then gone on to lose in the next round, seemingly as more of a mentality issue than the player she is facing second. Stephens claimed the seventh WTA title of her career earlier this season at the Guadalajara 250 event and that could prove an interesting factor this week, although she faces a tough opener against rising star Linda Fruhvirtova. 17-year-old Fruhvirtova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 74th last month after claiming her maiden WTA title at the Chennai Open but she has since lost two matches in an understandable climb-down. This match is well worth keeping away from accumulators but given Stephens’ triumph in Guadalajara earlier this year back the American to edge this one.
