Former world number six Sloane Stephens lost in the first round of the Strasbourg Open on Monday to make it five-straight defeats on tour. The 29-year-old won the Guadalajara Open back in February for a seventh career WTA title and her first since the 2018 Miami Open. Current world number 53, Stephens won the US Open in 2017 and she finished runner-up to Simona Halep at Roland-Garros a year later.
World number 103 Jule Niemeier has enjoyed some success on the ITF circuit in recent weeks and she impressed in a decent defeat to Bianca Andreescu at the Stuttgart Open. The 22-year-old has a creditable chance at the upset in this first meeting with Stephens and this match should be left well away from an accumulator.
