THE PREDICTION

World number five Aryna Sabalenka received a bye to the round of 16 of the San Diego Open as the third seed here but she could well have done with a kinder first round fixture. The 24-year-old is no doubt one of the best players on the tour when she is hot but after a concerning season with brief blips of form she has only recently exhibited something close to her best game with runs to the semi-finals of the Cincinnati Masters and the US Open – losing to eventual champions Caroline Garcia and Iga Swiatek, respectively. Trying to predict which version of former world number three Sloane Stephens will take to the court late on Thursday is impossible but the 29-year-old was impressive on Tuesday in taking out Jil Teichmann in straight sets.

Sabalenka and Stephens are two players on tour with some of the widest margins between their best and worst days, particularly Stephens, so leave this match well away from an accumulator. Otherwise, back Sabalenka to edge this outright as she leads Stephens 2-0 in their head-to-head record with two three-set victories over the American claimed last season.
