THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Simona Halep has impressed so far this season after coming back from a long injury that saw her miss much of 2021. The 30-year-old won her 23rd WTA title in her first tournament this season at Melbourne 1 and more recently she looked in imperious form at the Madrid Open before losing to eventual champion Ons Jabeur in the quarter-finals. Halep is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning her first at Roland-Garros in 2018 and her second at Wimbledon a year later.
World number 66 Ana Konjuh won her first and only WTA title to date as a breakthrough teenager at the Nottingham Open on grass, setting a career-high WTA world ranking of 20th two years later after a run to the quarter-finals of the US Open in 2016 and the round of 16 at Wimbledon a year later. The Croat has struggled with significant injuries for much of the last few years but she reached the Serbia Open final on clay last season before, unfortunately, having to retire from the match injured. This will be a tough opener for Halep if she does not start fully up to speed but the Romanian should be backed to come through outright with an adoring French Open crowd behind her.
Ana Konjuh has pulled out of Roland-Garros, replaced by lucky loser Natasja Schunk. Take Halep to beat Schunk in straight sets.
