World number 42 Shuai Zhang is riding a three-match losing streak on clay but to be fair to the 33-year-old she has drawn some seriously tough openers of late in Ekaterina Alexandrova and Simona Halep. The Chinese won her third WTA title, and first since 2017, at the Lyon Open back in February with an impressive campaign and she was impressive in a run to the third round of the Australian Open earlier this season. World number 82 Martina Trevisan famously reached the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros back in 2020 on her debut in Paris but the 28-year-old has struggled to match that run ever since. The Italian ha not won a tour-level match since the first round of the aforementioned Lyon Open but she is something of an anomaly here with the potential for a good run in front of home fans in Rome. Considering Shuai Zhang’s recent run, taking Trevisan to snatch at least a set could be the shrewd move here but leave this match well away from an accumulator.
