World number 30 Jil Teichmann has been enjoying her most consistent season on tour to date despite winning both of her WTA titles back in 2019. The 25-year-old reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland-Garros this summer on her favoured clay, on which she also made the semi-finals of the Madrid Masters and quarter-finals of the Rome Masters. A run to the Cincinnati Open final last season is proof that she is more than capable on a hardcourt and she should be more than capable of reaching the third round at the US Open for a first time.
THE PREDICTION
However, the Swiss has drawn one of the shorter straws amongst the unseeded players in world number 36 Shuai Zhang, who reached the quarter-finals of the Cleveland Championships this week before defeat to Alize Cornet. The 33-year-old claimed her third WTA title earlier this season at the Lyon Open and just last week she reached the quarter-finals at the Cincinnati Masters with victories over Naomi Osaka, Ekaterina Alexandrova and Anett Kontaveit. The Chinese star is probably the just-about favourite to come through here with a 1-0 lead in their head-to-head record but three sets could be a suitable alternative to picking a winner from a high-quality first round clash.
