World number two Anett Kontaveit came back from a set down to oust an impressive Tereza Martincova on Wednesday. The 26-year-old is coming up to a year since she burst into the form of her career, winning four of her last six tournaments before finishing runner-up at the WTA Finals, but she has struggled to maintain that level this season after contracting covid-19 in the spring. World number 44 Shuai Zhang is no pushover on any given day but the Chinese star has been in excellent shape this week in Cincinnati, beating Naomi Osaka and Ekaterina Alexandrova in straight sets. The 33-year-old trails Kontaveit 3-1 in their head-to-head record but Kontaveit took their most recent encounter at the Sydney tennis Classic back in January. Three sets seem likely here, though, and Shuai Zhang’s form suggests backing her to snatch at least a set is the shrewd move.
