THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Aleksandar Vukic broke inside the top 50 on tour for the first time after reaching a maiden ATP final at the Atlanta Open last July, where he came desperately close to victory in a tight three-set defeat to top seed Taylor Fritz. The Aussie also reached the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Masters before his form fell away but making that final in Atlanta will have broadened his horizons on tour after spending much of the past few years struggling to stay on it.
20-year-old Shintaro Mochizuki has enjoyed almost the totally opposite scenario as a young player bursting onto the scene at his native Tokyo Open last October, claiming a huge upset over top seed Taylor Fritz en-route to the semi-finals. The world number 149 has failed to win a tour-level match since that heroic run on home soil but he qualified handily this week to look ready for a battle on his Indian Wells debut, two years on from his Masters bow at the Miami Open. Neither player brings much recent form to the table so back Mochizuki to earn at least a set on momentum from qualifying to leave this result up to chance.
