World number 50 Shelby Rogers pulled off another Grand Slam upset with a straight-sets victory over compatriot Danielle Collins. The 29-year-old is the last player to beat the now retired Ash Barty at last season’s US Open and she also shocked Maria Sakkari at Wimbledon last summer, with inconsistency her biggest weakness. World number 20 Daria Kasatkina has so far had an easy time of it at Roland-Garros, conceding just five games across two victories against qualifiers Rebecca Sramkova and Fernanda Contreras Gomez. The former world number 10 reached the quarter-finals here in 2018 on her favoured surface but she is an excellent all-courter with two WTA titles won last season on hardcourts at the St. Petersburg Open and Philip Island Trophy as well as final reached on grass and clay.
Rogers is also a former quarter-finalist in Paris but she is less dependable than Kasatkina, especially after a bug result. Three sets seem likely in this possible thriller and backing the Russian to win at least one of them as the just-about favourite seems wise.
