23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams needs no introduction. The fact that the 40-year-old is back at Wimbledon after a whole year off the tour will be the story of the tournament for however long she stays in it and as a record seven-time champion here she will always be considered a contender. Williams won the most recent of her 73 WTA titles at the Auckland International back in 2020 with her most recent Grand Slam title coming, whilst pregnant, at the 2017 Australian Open. The American reached the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International Women’s Doubles this week before partner Ons Jabeur was forced to pull out through injury, leaving Williams with just two matches under her belt in 12 months.
World number 113 Harmony Tan will make her Wimbledon debut here in the most blockbuster way imaginable and the Frenchwoman has challenged some good players in recent weeks on grass. 24-year-old Tan took a set from Tamara Zidansek at ‘s-Hertogenbosch before defeat earlier this month and she could take early chances against Williams who, despite all the encouragement she will receive by an adoring Wimbledon crowd, is still playing her first singles match in exactly a year. Back Williams to come through outright here but it would not be a surprise to see this opener reach a nervy third set.
