THE PREDICTION

40-year-old Serena Williams was already world number one with four of her Open Era record 23 Grand Slam titles in the bag by the time 19-year-old Emma Raducanu was born and this blockbuster of a match will likely be an emotional ‘changing of the guard’ moment after Williams announced her impending departure from tennis. Whilst Raducanu has struggled with her first full season on tour since a miraculous run to the US Open title last season the Brit has her whole career ahead of her and there is plenty of potential to be a mainstay top 10 player for years to come, even if she drops back into the pack this time next month after losing her US Open points. Williams is putting her remaining energy into one basket, the US Open, later this month and if this match goes the distance she may well start to wind down to protect herself for New York. The fear of missing out her farewell tournament could well affect the American’s performance here and despite her recent form Raducanu will savour the big-game atmosphere here.

Williams won her first match in 14 months against Nuria Parrizas-Diaz in Toronto before a competitive defeat to Belinda Bencic but Raducanu’s returning should be too much to handle for the 40-year-old over three sets. Back the Brit to win outright here, or at least a set inside an accumulator.
