THE LOWDOWN
Serbia lost 0-3 to Spain in a seriously tough opener on Wednesday, playing without their talisman Novak Djokovic and in front of a partisan crowd in Valencia. Laslo Djere came in as a surprise second option, with Filip Krajinovic the expected starter, and he played well to take fellow clay aficionado Albert Ramos-Vinolas to three tight sets on a hardcourt that suited neither player. Miomir Kecmanovic put in a reasonable shift in a straight-sets defeat, via two tiebreaks, to Roberto Bautista Agut but the Spaniard’s experience really told in the key moments as a seasoned international talisman for his country. Nikola Cacic and Dusan Lajovic took the first set in the dead-rubber doubles match before losing in three sets.
South Korea grabbed a huge result in their first option clash as Soonwoo Kwon heaped more misery on an out-of-sorts Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets in Valencia. The dependable Vasek Pospisil came back from a set down to beat world number 384 Seong-Chan Hong but the 25-year-old came close to producing one of the biggest upsets in recent Davis Cup Finals and South Korea were also far more competitive in the doubles than should have been possible, taking Pospisil and Auger-Aliassime to three sets before losing the tie 1-2.
THE PREDICTION
World number 384 Seong-Chan Hong greatly impressed in his Davis Cup debut against a seasoned international veteran in Vasek Pospisil but he will likely face another consummate professional in Laslo Djere or Filip Krajinovic, if the world number 41 is fit to play, and lose out once again in the opening match of this tie. That leaves world number 33 Miomir Kecmanovic facing off with world number 74 Soonwoo Kwon, fresh from stunning Felix Auger-Aliassime. The Serb beat Kwon in straight sets at Melbourne 1 back in January of last season but the Korean will be buzzing off a season-best result against Auger-Aliassime and that makes this a tougher call. Nevertheless, Serbia have enough depth in their doubles options to come through 2-1 winners here at the least, so back Serbia to win outright here and leave the first option clash up to chance.
