World number 29 Sebastian Korda first truly came to the fore here in Miami three years ago with a brilliant run to the quarter-finals halted by Andrey Rublev. The Florida native will be backed to the hilt this fortnight by a raucous home support but where before there was perhaps too much expectation on the talented youngster’s shoulders there is now a little trepidation as it seems every recent bloom on tour is followed by an injury setback or rapid depreciation. Korda finished runner-up to Adrian Mannarino at the Astana Open last October before an excellent run to the semi-finals of the Shanghai Masters but he has struggled to make a dent since, although there were encouraging moments in a three-set defeat to Daniil Medvedev last time out at Indian Wells.
Former world number nine Roberto Bautista Agut will move back inside the top 100 on tour after a straight-sets victory over fellow qualifier Emilio Nava on Thursday but this looks too steep of a challenge for the out-of-sorts Spaniard. Korda leads their head-to-head 3-0 as things stand and he should not have too much trouble extending that against a currently lesser version of the once top 20 stalwart. Back Korda to win in straight sets to make statement at his home tournament.
